His practice is unusual among estate planners, in that he has extensive experience in special needs and Medicaid-related planning, as well as with estate and tax planning for individuals and families of all wealth levels, including high net worth families.
Larry is originally from Asheville, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a degree in accounting in 1981. Before entering law school, Larry practiced with Arthur Young and Company as an accountant. In 1988, Larry graduated summa cum laude from the University of California Hastings College of Law, where he served as an Articles Editor of the Hastings Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif. Upon graduation, Larry returned to North Carolina and was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 1988.
Larry co-founded the firm with Bill McPherson in 1997, with the vision of creating a boutique estate planning firm. Since 2011, the firm has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as a First Tier law firm in the areas of both Elder law and Trusts and Estates law.
Larry is a Certified Public Accountant and has been a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law since 1995. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), as well as a member of the Special Needs Alliance and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. He has served as Chair of both the Elder Law and Special Needs and the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Sections of the North Carolina Bar Association, as well as Chair of the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. He is a current board member of the Special Needs Alliance. Larry has received the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent® Peer Review Rating and has been named to the North Carolina Super Lawyers magazine (Thomson Reuters) from 2006-2023.
Larry is an active member of the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation and Judea Reform Congregation and serves as a board member of the Triangle Community Foundation. In his spare time, Larry enjoys playing pool and golf and spending time at the lake with his wife and daughters.
